I created a very simple path in photoshop, and I wanted to bring it into InDesign but I have not figured out a way to do it.

I have tried copy pasting, drag and drop, and importing the PSD (which only partially worked).

automatic idml file creation with .pdf

Hi, is there a way for indesign to automatically make an imdl file every time i make a .pdf?

I work with 5 people who are all in indesing 2015, i am on 2017, the company buys single editions of the software so they don't have the automatic conversion capability. Working on on many files per day and they keep reminding me to make a legacy file but i forget when trying to also move fast.

Thanks

XML for Conference Agenda

Hi folks, I'm hoping some seasoned XML users can give me some guidance!

My task is to redesign and streamline creation of conference agendas for my employer. They put on 20-30 conferences per year, and have to make regular amendments to the content as speakers send in many changes over the time the agenda is available. It looks like the key to doing this kind of project is to learn to use XML, but as I'm under no illusions as to how difficult this will be, I was hoping I could first get some direction from folk who know best, to stop me from barking up the wrong tree et cetera.

The structure of the agenda is complicated, so it's very much a case of learning to swim in the deep end! Here is an example of a competitors agenda: http://www.global-engage.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Global-Precision-Medicine-Biomarke rs-Europe-2017.pdf

While of course the design will be different, I'm showing this example as the structure of the schedule is fundamentally the same in particular:

  • columns are 3 separate 'streams'
  • rows correspond with time
  • different types of event occur
  • some events are highlighted
  • row height defined by amount of content

(Some events have more or fewer streams, but I am prepared to make multiple templates if needs be.)

I gather XML is used for this kind of job, but it seems like a colossal task for a new XML user. I don't have an intense deadline, and I'm willing to put in the time and effort to learn (I intend to purchase and study 'A Designer's Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML: Harness the Power of XML to Automate your Print and Web Workflows', which I've heard great things about).

Is this stupidly overambitious? Have I wrongly assumed that XML is the way to do this? If it is possible, how long might you estimate a fairly tech-savvy, but XML novice to take to create something like this? Your thoughts would be hugely appreciated! Many thanks in advance :-)

Interactive menu buttons

Hi there,

I have a menu bar master in inDesign, visible for each page. On click to button "Chapter 1" , object changes color and background and it takes me to the bookmarked page.

I want the same action (change color and background of the button "Chapter 1")  to happen when viewing the bookmarked page (without the click action). Is that part of animation or interactive part of inDesign?

I attached some images. Thank you

Importing Endnotes

So I regularly get word documents with a lot of endnotes, I need to import them so they restart at each chapter and also restart at each chapter in the endnotes. Is there a way to do this so InDesign does most of the work for me? I've been importing it then fixing them all manually but I'm certain there must be an easier way. Any suggestions?

InDesign CC is very slow on my new MacBook Pro!?

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me out, I've just setup my new MacBook Pro in the last few weeks and noticed that InDesign is very slow at performing pretty simple tasks like opening files, saving files and sometimes moving items around.

I also updated to that latest Adobe Creative Cloud and I'm using macOS High Sierra version 10.13.2.

Hebrew fonts showing up as squares

Hi,

I'm using InDesign CS6 and all my Hebrew fonts are appearing as pink squares as if it can't read the font. I downloaded new ones in case something was wrong with the fonts, but it does the same thing. I tried adjusting the font to 'regular' instead of bold, that doesn't work. Can someone help me please?
Thanks

Font changes when pasting between InDesign documents

$

I'm copying and pasting the content of one InDesign CS5 document into another and am finding that the font of my general body text is changing from Times to Minion Pro.

This occurs with all the following methods:

  • Copy and Paste multiple text frames
  • Copy and Paste single text frames
  • Copy and Paste content of a text frame into a new text frame
  • Drag and Dropping multiple text frames

I can't see any option in Preferences or Character pallette along the lines of 'Paste Remembers Fonts' (in the same vein as 'Paste Remembers Layers'.

I've change the default font in my existing documents to Times and also changed it with no documents open so all new documents have Times as the default.

I've also changed the Basic Paragraph style font to Times.

The correct paragraph styles already exist in both documents and remain in place when I copy and paste. Fonts for all other paragraph styles (eg headings etc) come across correctly, it's only my main body text that changes, with the font of the style showing as overidden.

Of course, I can simply select all the pasted text and clear the overides but I'd rather solve the problem properly.

One glimmer of hope: If I start another new document since changing the default font for new docs, the copy and paste retains my Times font.

Any thoughts? Can I fix my existing document's bad habit or will I need to start again?

Synchronize Book bug - ID 2018

I have a book with about 330 documents, ranging from 1 to 15 pages long. All documents include one multiple-page story, with every frame for the story set for two columns. When I synchronize documents, the frame on page 2 of every document is changed to a single column. This occurs only on page 2, no matter how long the document is. This is InDesign 2018; the issue (with the same book, before conversion to ID 2018) did not occur with earlier versions. It occurs even if I'm re-synching a document, with no changes to the master document's styles since the last synch.

When looking at the booklet, I see the pages are to the edge of the paper (7 x 3.5), and when I choose preview and print on letter (8.5 x 11) there is a slight gap in the center of the booklet. How can I make sure that gap doesn't show?

Indesign cs3 won't open mac os after update to 5.0.4.682 HELP!

I posted my problems trying to install the CS3 suite on my replacement imac the other day and thought I had it all solved. I tried to run indesin today and found blank boxes and no control over it so I found the update on the Adobe site and installed it. I hung up but appeared top have worked because the version number was updated.

When i tried to run it, I got an error message about conflicting plug ins and had to force quit. I removed the plug in mentioned and still it did the same thing.

So now I am stuck.

BTW, I also updated to High Sierra.

Creating versatile PDFs

Hello,

I'm trying to prepare a PDF for both print and on-screen viewing. Because I don't know and can't control how the PDF is going to be viewed, I want a best-of-both or best compromise approach here. I do not want to send two separate documents, just one document that can stand up to either screen or print. My general experience is that photographs and renderings that look great on the screen tend to look much darker/gloomier when printed out - I'd like to prevent this as much as possible.

Any tips on the best approach here for image handling, color profiles etc? I am exporting a PDF from InDesign, my materials are a mixture of color, B&W, line drawings and renderings / photographs (both raster and vector).

Thank you

after upgrade to High Sierra, InDesign CC 2018 not opening

(Silly me) this morning I upgraded to High Sierra. I am running 10.13.1 on a new iMac that is only two months old.

I click the InDesign icon in my dock. The dot blinks like it is opening, but I do not get the "loading" screen. Eventually, the dot goes solid like the program is open, but I can't get to the program. I use the command+tab navigator to get to the InDesign program icon that shows up, but again I cannot get to the program.

I can force quit InDesign which shows as "not responding."

I have tried --

-- relaunching InDesign

-- holding down keys to reset preferences (same result as above: nothing)

-- restarting my computer

-- updating InDesign from the Adobe Creative Cloud menu

-- uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign from the Adobe Creative Cloud menu (note: I opted to "keep" preferences)

And nothing is working.

Note: Photoshop CC is fine. Illustrator CC is fine. InDesign CS6 is also NOT WORKING.

I am now going on three hours of trouble shooting. Help!

My InDesign 2018 crashes when I open an existing document and try to do any thing with type which includes: Selecting a font from the font menu to change a font or when trying to change a font through the Type>Find Font menu. This happen with any font I am trying to change and I do not get a crash report.

Re: InDesign CC 2017 slow performance

I have tried all the fixes mentioned here including this most recent plug-in. Nothing has fixed my issue. Saving, clicking, select all, moving from one page to another, zoom, every action I try results in a 20 to 30 second lag watching the spinning beach ball. Every once in a while I get 3 or 4 actions in before the beach ball starts again.

My gut tells me this is document specific some how. Some documents that have VERY large file content lag more than others. Also I'm suspicious that reusing older files that have sizes, etc set up hold on to old links that can drag down InDesign. I had hoped, as was suggested here, that saving as an .IDML then opening that to start working with would fix the lag.  No luck there either. I agree with everyone here that this is unacceptable from Adobe. This thread was started back in late 2016. It is past time that there should be a fix for users who depend on Adobe InDesign to make a living.

Reading image develop settings in InDesign

$

Hi abobe community!

I'm putting together a fairly large InDesign document, with about 100 images linked into it from various sources.  Most of the images I am trying to link in have Lightroom develop settings on them to tweak tone and white balance, and I would like to keep those live and editable through the process.  When I drag them into InDesign, however, the develop settings don't come through to the InDesign.

Is there a way to have InDesign read the develop setting from my linked images, without having to export all of them to create a new flat copy of each one?

Thanks much,

-G

CS4 with Mac High Sierra

I've been using CS4 Creative Suite for several years and with every system upgrade I worry that I won't be able to continue using it.  (I don't use it regularly but I have important documents that I need to access periodically).  I just updated my MacBook Pro to the latest OS, High Sierra.  During the installation, I was prompted to upgrade Java to be able to use InDesign which I did and that installation was successful.  Today, I tried to open an InDesign doc.  In Design opened (finally) but the doc did not open (the name shows up at the top of the window, but nothing else is visible.

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could assist with working out how to correctly export an indesign document which contains tabs. The tabs sit outside of the artwork area to the right as they are will be used as dividers. There are only 5 tabs and 160 pages.

Hope this makes sense and someone can help!

Thanks
