Tracking settings are lost during copy & paste

I am using CS6 on a Mac (OS 10.6.8).  When I try to copy & paste from one document to another, the tracking of the original item is changed to what I believe is the default setting of the new document.  I am trying to move smaller documents into 1 large document, both were created in InDesign CS6.  It is a basic text that is being moved from one document to another.
