How do I do the inverse of multiply mode?

I'd like to invert some sketches and have the black background be transparent so I can place the sketches on top of a dark photo (the sketches, originally done with pencil on white paper should appear as done with white ink.) my thought was to do this sort of in the opposite way that I would use the multiply mode if i wanted a white background to drop out.
