Import Word file loses non-breaking hyphens
I've had problems importing some Word files created by professional translators. They're full of non-breaking spaces and non-breaking hyphens, and when I import the files into InDesign the non-breaking hyphens are completely lost (they aren't just turned into discretionary hyphens, etc.).
I've tried creating a new Word file, entering some text, adding a non-breaking hyphen, and then importing that file into InDesign, and the same problem occurs.
Could somebody please try to replicate this?
I'm using ID CS6 (version 8.0.1) and Word 2008 for Mac (version 12.2.3).

Horizontal Movements for Zooming In and Out
Hello!
So I've had this issue with multiple of my Adobe programs - usually I am able to zoom in and out using which way I horizontally move my mouse (clicking and dragging right will zoom in, and dragging left will zoom out) but I have seem to hit some keyboard shortcut so that no matter which way I click and drag my mouse, it will extremely zoom in on the selection.
What is the shortcut to return my zoom to normal! I'm so accustomed to it, and now it's taking twice as long to accomplish anything.

Character Styles Panel Legend
Hi,
It's odd that I can't find this online anywhere, but I was wondering if there is a legend somewhere to the functions of the character and paragraph styles windows. Most of the functions in the window you can hold your mouse over and see the ToolTip for, but not everything.
You'd think that you would find one here, Apply paragraph and character text styles in Adobe InDesign , but oddly it doesn't even contain a picture of the panel. In the picture, if you look above the blue arrows I drew, you see a paragraph symbol followed by Salmon (Main TOC Highlights). It is right before the "Create new style group" button. I am trying to figure out what that part of the panel is supposed to represent. You can't right click and edit it, and a tooltip doesn't show up when you keep your mouse over it.
If you notice, I've highlighted the Latino Media section, and it appears to have that Salmon character style, yet the panel shows the highlighted character style is [None]. However, the part between the buttons shows it as the Salmon style (which is in a group named Main TOC Highlights). I've never seen this before, and there is no legend of the panel online to tell me what indicates what.
The reason I am asking is because I am trying to figure out how I made the highlight colors in my Table of Contents match the colors they are supposed to every time I update. For example, Latino Media has a salmon-colored thick underline character style (I used thick underlines to create the highlights you see). When I update the TOC, it would always remember that. However, if I went to the Latino Media header that TOC entry refers to and changed just the text to Hispanic Media, the next time I update the TOC, it would have a white background (no salmon highlight).
The way my document is structured, I have sections that I call Sub-TOCs that divide major sections in the book, which contain cross references to the pages they start on. The pages are color-coded, and in these sub-TOCs, I have character styles that highlight the sections in the same color that they end up getting highlighted in the main TOC. See picture below:
When I would update the Main TOC, these colors would always stay, and I can't for the life of me remember how I made it do that. I figured the key would be figuring out what that part of the character styles panel represents that I was originally asking.

why is image pixelated in indesign
I copied and pasted a 1886 x 1505 pixel image at 350 dpi from Photoshop CS3 to InDesign and the image is pixelated.
Then I saved the file as a jpg and then in InDesign I Placed the picture and the image is pixelated.
Then I saved the file as a raster file by choosing Export, Paths to Illustrator. Then I Placed the picture and the image cannot be seen.
This image is ok if I don't mind 72 dpi but I do mind. Please, how do I get a quality image from Photoshop to InDesign?

How can I type Japanese in inDesign?
Hello,
I am using the U.S version of inDesign and trying to put Japanese on my document.
However, inDesign can't recoganize Japanese and showing just as squares.

뉴맥북프로에서 일러스트 cc와 인디자인 cc를 실행해 문자를 삭제할 때 마지막 글자에 밑줄이 그어지며 delete키를 두번 눌러야 지워집니다.
이것은 이전의 맥에서도 있었습니다. 하지만, 이번 신형에서 delete키를 한 번 누르면 맥북에서 경고음이 한 번 울리고 한 번 더 delete키를 눌러야 지워집니다.
여기서 문제는 경고음인데요 계속해서 문자를 쳐야하는 작업에서 경고음을 계속 들어야하는 것은 신경이 쓰이는 문제라고 생각합니다.
제 맥북에서만 이러한 문제가 일어나는 것인지 아니면 모든 맥북에서 이러한 문제가 일어나니 사운드를 끄고 작업을 해야하는지 답변해주시면 좋겠습니다.

How to Redistribute text across resized document?
I am trying to publish a book on Amazon. I paid a professional to format the book for me for another publisher, but the deal feel through, so now I want to self publish on Amazon. I have the book files from the publisher in PDF format. The problem is that the PDF page size is 5 x 7 and Amazon wants me to resize the page size to 6 x 9.
This is a 203 page book. I was able to resize the page size to 6 x 9 through Cropping, but it has created a new problem. I assumed that when I resized the pages to a larger size that the text would be redistributed across the new page size. That did not happen. The page size increased, but the text on each page stayed the same. The effect of this is that now about 45% of the page is blank white space. What I need to to is to tell acrobat to redistribute the text across the new page size, kind of like water filling up a series bucket, filling up one page and then pouring over to the next, and so on and so forth.
I am using Acrobat Pro DC and I have no idea what to call the function or how to find it. Please help!

Publish online via InDesign
Yesterday I have tried out the "publish online" on my Resume (3 pages).
I applied 2 hyperlinks interactions on the following: 1. Email 2. Public linkedin
Interactions were included/checked while exporting to a high quality PDF.
When I opened the PDF the interactions were there and worked perfectly!
Unfortunately via the "public online" view the interaction were not clickable while they were in my exported PDF (same export!).
Since I want to send out my resume via a publish online link rather then a PDF attachment would be great to know about your relevant experience.

Indesign CC 2017 keeps crashing
Running Sierra 10.12.1 on MacBook Pro and latest 27" iMac (few months old) and continuously crashes.
Anybody else experience this?

InDesign crashes on launch
Yesterday afternoon InDesign crashed on launch and I have been unable to get it to launch since.
So far I have taken the following steps:
- I have deleted the preferences cache and restarted.
- I have updated to InDesign CC 2017
- I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign
- I have signed out of Creative Cloud and signed back in again
- I have been through my fonts menu and cleared that out
- I have started in 'safe mode'
- I have logged in as another user
I am running an iMac on OS X El Capitan on version 10.11.6
Any help or suggestions on how to get me back up and running would be greatly appreciated!

issue with crashing file on start (tried all options - feel helpless)
Hi,
I have a recurring issue on startup of an InDesign file, I've read dozens of articles here and feel helpless. I've:
- rebooted
- reinstalled InDesign / reinstalled Creative Cloud
- cleared Cache
- deleted fonts
etc. etc. but am still stuck.

Delete blank first-page, without affecting the spreads
I´m making a book and have several documents. But when i add the chapters to the book, it all mess up because of the blank first-page pages.
How do i get rid of that first-page pages? I have searched for hours the internet, and tried different things in the InDesign-menus, without success.
I just want to delete the blank pages, without affecting the spreads.

Drop Shadow Overprint Outer Glow
Hi,
I am trying to use two effects on an object, a coloured outer glow and a black drop shadow.
I want the drop shadow to appear over the top of the outer glow (i.e. control the stacking priority) as I want to match as close as possible effects I have previously placed in Photoshop.
I can only get the outer glow to appear over the drop shadow though, thus 'killing it'.
I can attach screen grabs if it helps but imagine someone will know what I mean!

Indesign CS6/V8.2 will not open in OSX Sierra
Have read all the droll replies from keyboard warriors saying suck it up, however, having paid several hundreds of dollars for a copy of Master Suite CS6 some months before CC was launched (unbeknown to me) am not prepared to do so.
Have reinstalled and added the Upgrade to find Indesign will not go past the Start Splash screen on OSX Sierra. Would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Interactive to-and-fro "wipe effect" [see images] edited
Dear community,
I wonder if anyone knows how to create an interactive "wipe" effect that the viewer can slide backwards and forwards, exactly as shown on the two images and websites here:

I'm guessing that it's a variation on the "wipe" transition in InDesign interactive pdf, but can't make it interactive so that the viewer can slide one image over another.

Problem with type on a path
Any 100% black type I put on a path in InDesign CS6 turns very light gray. Same text shows 100% in any regular text box. I have checked all menus and pulldowns for percentage. I do this all the time, not sure why it's not working now. I even saved and closed the document and moved it to another computer, still happening.

Why is everything pixelated and blurry in CS6?
Hi,
A few months ago I installed the trial versions of Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop on my MacBookPro. After they expired I purchased the standard student edition and used the provided key number to unlock the full versions. However, everything (including the sample fonts list, icons and opening menu) are pixelated and blurry. As a design student, it is incredibly distracting to see font that isn't smooth like it should be on a retina display...
I've updated Indesign to version 8.0.1 but to no avail. What could be wrong and how might I solve this problem?

CAN NOT apply master to first three pages?
I have tried everything and can't get this - I'm on indesign cc2017 latest version and i have three masters in a business plan i am doing
i have been using indesign for over 10 years and don't remember running into this before
i even tried using save as .imdl and opening up with CS6 - can't do it
my masters apply to page 4 on perfectly - am I missing something here?
