Extract pasted InDesign images?

$

I've received an InDesign package that has about 60 images in it, a mixture of vector (.ai and.pdf) and raster.

In the links panel, only about 8 of the images show up. These are also the only ones in the links folder.

This leads me to believe that the others were somehow pasted into the InDesign file.

I've contacted the creator, who has very limited experience of InDesign and he insists that he put them all in the same way, although I am suspicious.

Is there a way to verify if they have been pasted or to extract the files from it.

Extra information:

The suspected pasted links don't show up at all in the links panel, not even as embedded files.

The file will export to a pdf and the vectors still look sharp at 6400% in Acrobat.

I am sending this job to a printers as part of a book package and am worried about preflight.

When I right click on one of the offending images, the options that would normally be there on a correctly linked image such as Edit Original and "Graphic" are missing

I would really appreciate any help. Thanks

Can't select tools or settings in CS6

I just installed InDesign CS6 via creative cloud and I'm having an issue with selecting tools. For example with the Character Panel, when I select text in my document and go to the Character panel, InDesign won't let me select any other fonts, select the drop down menu, or change any font settings (size, tracking, etc.). If I'm in a text box I can't select the Direct Selection tool. I tried a new document and an old document with no luck. Any advice? Thanks!

Indexing with more than one NUMBER per PAGE

Friends,

I know how to make an INDEX that uses page numbers, and it works nicely.

I have been using only one hymn per page.

But, now I want to do a book that (sometimes) has more than one hymn per page.

In other words, "Actual Page 566" might contain Number 566 and Number 567.

"Actual Page 567" might contain Number 568 and Number 569.

In the hymn section (200 pages out of 1100) we will not be listing the "Actual page numbers" because I cannot abide dual numbering systems.

Friends, how can I do this?

Can I assign some sort of numbering system variable to each hymn ?

"re-resource" an isolated .indd file (automated process?)

hi all.

i am trying to edit a .indd file that i have in a folder over here (along with a pdf and a jpg version). i am new to the software and it is obvious to me that i should be saving something more than the indd.

is there a good way to re-associate the backup data so that it is in the same folder as this indd file - or how does this work exactly?

i mean, it opens OK but if i want to edit something it would be good to have the associated data. at the same time - when i put it together i was on a deadline and working fast and my images moved around quite a bit. so these images are all in a folder somewhere and i suppose i could manually go through and find each of them but i would really prefer not to spend all this time doing this.

can anyone help me out on this question but also tell me how i should handle this in the future?

Thank you in advance,

jon

Fonts Manager? (Missing Fonts)

$

i have had to do a fresh install and re-installed my custom fonts in the mac font book app.

however, when i open a indd file with these fonts it shows them as missing and i cannot figure out how to "re link" or "re point" ID to these fonts.

i would VERY much like to avoid selecting all the text and re-choosing the fonts as all of this is customized by size etc and if i do this i am afraid i will lose my formatting.

should i just close the doc and re-open? can anyone help me figure out if there is a way to globally re-associate the original fonts?

THANKS

putting the footnote at the end of a document (not end of text)

i am trying to find a setting or a method that will let me put the actual footnote at the bottom of a document in a separate text box whereas right now it is showing up in the same text box that the numbers are in and i just want to show the numbers in this text box but show the actual note at the bottom of my document in a different text box.

can this be done?

thank you.

How to make an ebook from a Microsoft Word document?

Hi everyone.

I'm a newbie and starting to feel lost.

Ultimately my main question is how to make a publish-worthy ebook (pdf? epub?  mobi?) out of a Word document.

I'm usually pretty good at doing what I don't know how to do. So when a friend asked me to make an ebook out of his 250 page microsoft word document that he could sell online, I thought it couldn't be that hard.  Now I'm thinking I was naieve.

I have the new Microsoft Word 2013 Preview installed and used its new feature to save the .docx as a .pdf.  It's nothing fancy.  It's 99.5% text, a large graphic on the coverpage, and maybe one or two small graphics at various places.  I wasn't aiming for it being a perfect work of art.  I just wanted to make sure it was decently formatted and readable.

I *assume* (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the PDF file could be read by most ereaders.   I just downloaded the InDesign trial thinking that I could open the PDF in InDesign (wrong) and from there make a few adjustments, resave it as a pdf, and also save it in ePUB and .mobi formats.  It's obviously not so simple.  To my surprise, InDesign can't even open the pdf file.  ("Cannot open the file... may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing..." or "Please convert ...... to an InDesign document before adding it to a book file.")

I'll try to look at some of the tutorials mentioned in these forums.  Obviously I haven't done my homework dilligently yet.  But in the meantime, if someone could shed some light on all this for me that'd be tremendously appreciated.

Thanks for any tips!

In Design CS5 crashes when wrapping text around

I haven't been using ID for some time but I've just written my master thesis and need to edit a few things before printing, so I need it fixed like.. ASAP. Please help!

I've had this problem for a couple of days and it started like that: I placed a photo and wrapped text around, then I needed to move the photo a bit and then... ID freezes. After a couple of ctrl+alt+del action I figured out it starts to work when I first turn wrapping off, then move the photo and then turn wrapping on. Funny thing it didn't happen to every photo, just some of them. But then I managed, and now I have a problem. I need to resize the text frame on every page, and despite turning off text wrapping ID crashes when I resize the text frame that has a photo above, but! they're not even the same photos as before! :/ Any ideas?

I'm using InDesign CS5, Windows 7 (64 bit), Intel Core i7-2630qm @ 2.00Ghz, 6 GB RAM

scaling a poster from 24 x 36 to A0 format?

$

i have an InDesign poster that i prepared at 24" x 36" and i now need to print it and mail it (on deadline) so that it is an A0 format.

i see that this means it now needs to be 33.1" x 46.8". i can see that this means that it needs to be scaled UP by a factor of 1.3 which will leave a little bit more of a border on the short end i think (33.1"/24" = 1.379X and 46.8"/36" = 1.3X).

is there a quick and easy way to do this in InDesign?

THANKS

Exporting InDesign files to Flash, CS5.5

I exported an InDesign file as a Flash file but in flash it shows up as low res when I preview it or when others preview it. What am I doing wrong? I have never used Flash before. I am working with CS5.5

I exported the file as a SWF file and when a colleague viewed it, she said it was quite pixelated.

What should I do? Is there a better method for someone very very new to Flash?

hi all.

i have an A0 sized poster (33" x 46") that i am sending off in the mail and while i have notes here somewhere on correct settings at 24 x 36 i was just hoping to get a second opinion on this. the poster will be at an architecture/design conference and i'd like to retain as much detail as possible.

i will be printing at some US printing shop and i'd also love recommendations on what type of paper or other suggestions on media.

THANK YOU for any advice.

i would like to set my grid alignment for 0,0 on the top left and then to read upward to the right and to the bottom. this way the bottom right corner would read 24 across and 36 deep.

right now i don't even believe this grid is centered over the middle of my document and i am having a hard time figuring out which preferences control this.

Numbering paragraphs: erratic menu

$

In paragraph styles options / Bullets and numbering / Format the menu only accepts straight number (1,2,3,4)

With old files already fine where the roman format was used, if opened again, the roman numerals get converted to arabic ones.*

The problem was clear trying to put a period in the field  from ^#^t to ^#.^t.

Sent the file to another computer and no problem was reported.

Trashed preferences and checked extensions but the error continues.

Should made a new installation?

Thank you.

*Some days ago changing some sequence pages in a file with prelsm in roman numbers, something similar: the file refused to accept the section in roman and converted to arabics... Perhaps a coincidence? This only happeded with a file.

cs6 wrapped text disappears when applied on top of rectangle frame

I'm new to InDesign.  I know how to wrap text around an object on a blank canvas; and I know how to type text on top of a layer (i.e. rectangle frame) by turning off Text Wrap.  But I cannot figure out why my text keeps disappearing when I try to wrap text around a photo which is on top of a rectangle frame layer.  I'm using a Mac (OS 10.6.8).  I hope someone can help.

Paragraph Style Isn't Working (numbering in consecutive chapters)

$

I have a book layout that requires numbered paragraphs, no problem... However, in consecutive chapters as I highlight paragraphs and assign them the paragraph style used in prior chapters, the numbering starts where it left off in the former chapter. So say the first chapter has 7 paragraphs numbered. Then in chapter three there are a series of paragraphs, but when I highlight them with the numbering paragraph style, it starts at 8 and continues...

I have tried using List1,2,3,4,5... And in the set up of those lists I've unchecked continue numbering throughout stories...

I'm at a stand still until I can get this figured out.

I want the same style used throughout the book but able to start at 1 in each chapter or in each new back of number paragraphs related to one another....

Help PLEASE!

XML to InDesign

$

Hi,

I am working a lot with XML as a source. Till now I did make a flat XML (having for example as character styles "paragraph_bold" and "list_bold" where in XML it is only ""), imported in InDesign and mapped tags to styles. Recently I stumbled on a InDesign file made by somebody else (not reachable) who used "aid:pstyle" and "aid:cstyle" in XML tags and imported the XML in InDesign without making it flat and without mapping tags to styles. He also used in Paragraph and Character Styles Groups, having for example in the CharacterStyles Palette a Group "paragraph" with a style "bold" in it and a group "list" with a style "bold" in it.

I did export a XML from the InDesign file (I don't have the original XML file) and I did see something like this: "... text text text ...".

I tried to do the same thing but what I obtained was not exactly the same thing. After importing the XML file I found in the CharacterStyle Palette 2 new styles outside any Group: "paragraph|bold" and "list|bold". The XML started like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>

<root xmlns:aid="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/" xmlns:aid5="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/5.0/">

What did I do wrong? Or how should the XML look out so that after importing I do not obtain some new Styles?

The original InDesign file was made in InDesign CS 5.5 and I did try this on InDesign CS 5 and a trial Version of InDesign CS 6 with the same result.

If somebody can help,

Thank you very much!

Dan
