I have installed the CS6 suite in Windows safe mode (after multiple attempts did not work in normal mode, it kept stopping at 2% installed) using the Adobe application manager. I am on a trial period, my company is going to start paying monthly after the first free month.

All the adobe products work ok (photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver etc), except Indesign. When I double click the icon, the hourglass appear for a few seconds and nothing else.

If I double click the Indesign icon with Task manager open I can see that it appears as a 'process' for about 10 seconds, then disappears.

If I go into Safe mode Indesign will open and work but obviously this isn't ideal.

How can I fix this?

Any help would be great.

(I have done all the usual things, like uninstall the whole package & install again, restart etc. I also ran the Adobe suite cleaner tool incase old versions on this computer were interfering. I uninstalled everything, and deleted the Adobe folder etc.)

Hello! I am importing XML into InDesign and need to display the metadata in the attributes in the document that will be printed . For example, if I'm creating a lesson plan and the "lesson" tag has the attributes of: "lesson 2", "Day 2", "Read pages 3-5". I want those attributes to display next or under the word "Lesson 2." I should mention that there are about 500 "lesson" tags, each with different attributes. Is it possible to this with InDesign? I did not write this code so there's nothing I can do on that end, I have to work with what was given to me. I've been looking into this for a couple of days and can't find anything on this topic. I would greatly appreciate your help with this!

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8  about 2 weeks ago and was running Indesign CS5.5 fine before the update. Started to get program crashing issues before I even updated the OS, then after, I upgraded to CS6 and now am getting crashes everytime I try to even enact an "Open" dialog. Will not even load the dialog box, just quits and then takes me to the report. Click REOPEN and sometimes the program will not even load before going right back to a crash report screen?

I just tried the icon/resources folder fix I found which ran the program again, but still will not open or place files.

I updated from CS5 to CS6 using the Creative Cloud - on my Mac.  Now my previously created custom workspaces aren't showing up.  Yes, I tried copying them from the Library's Preferences folder into the CS6 preference folder, but they still don't show up.  I don't see a way to import workspaces.  I manually re-created my Photoshop workspace, but I don't want to have to do that with InDesign - I did too much work creating it in the first place.  Help, please.

Is anyone having issues saving as a .pdf file? When we try to do a save or save as, we often get file is already open, when it really isnt open at least on the task manager. We have to simply do a save as new name for it to save at all. Then of course it becomes annoying as now we have 12 versions that have to be saved in a day, delete the 11 once we are done for the day.

We are also getting lots of freezes and delays when in the Indesign files. This could be old files or new files or even files that were saved as IDML and started over in case of bloating.

We went into preferences and tried better performance under Interface and display performances, but still suffer from delays.

We are showing that all our Adobe Products are up to date based on the update manager.

I've been trying to export a multipage pdf to send to my print vendor, and something really weird has been happening: on page 1 of the pdf, one of my text frames has moved into what appears to be the center of the page.

I tried a few things to get it to work properly

• deleting the text frame resulted in a different frame being moved to the center of the spread.
• swapping pages 1 and 2 resulted in a logo (on the new page 1) being relocated to the corner of the page, and the same frame moving on page 2.
  
• exporting to a jpg worked perfectly
• overriding all master page items did nothing

what finally did the trick was the tried and true method of copy/pasting the whole page into a new document and exporting a pdf from there, then replacing the offending page in my original multipage pdf.

Is there anything I can do to insure that InDesign won't automatically adjust the layout of my documents when I make pdfs?

I have done some research but can't seem to find the cause of my problem that is causing indesing to crash. The last line on the stack in the crash report says that indesign ran its protectiveShutDown(), so I posted a link to the protectiveShutdownLog file. I only seem to get the error when I try to quit indesign with multiple documents open. I am using CS5.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and on PC windows 7. What is confusing is that it does NOT happen EVERY time I close indesign, only sometimes. I heavily use/test various scripts so I'm sure that has something to do with it. If I have more information on what the error is and some things that may cause it I can focus on what might produce those errors.

Is there a way to make a paragraph style to begin with a custom bullet plus numbering?

I've tried use numbering with "^B(^#)^t" as number style, but then I can't choose the proper bullet.

I know a paragraph like that is kind of odd, but unfortunately I do need it.

I am having a problem withexporting to PDF in CS6.

If a PDF is placed within an InDesign document and the whole document is then exported to PDF then InDesign CS6 crashes if the PDF that has been placed was created in Quark (these were actually created in Quark 8).

It's ok with PDFs from made in other programmes.

It is also ok if you use CS5.5 (which I have had to temporarily go back to).

I have tried chatting to Adobe but they ended up giving me a phone number to call. Have spent over an hour on the phone and not spoke to anyone yet.

So does anyone know the answer or is it a case of hoping that it gets fixed in a future update.

iMac 2.66GHz, 4GB Ram  - Mac OSX 10.6.8

I'm using ID 5.0 and have an illustrated children's book with each page consisting of a jpg file.  I've converted it to epub (to eventually also convert to MOBI) and everything looks great except for a pesky problem. 

When I proof the book in Adobe Digital Editions, everything looks great - I see the chapter names on the left side of the ADE browser (yay), and can scroll through each page fine, but only see at the top the number 4, (next to the printer icon on the top of the ADE page).  I have 4 chapters, yes, but I have something like 56 pages total within all of these chapters.  Since this is a kid's book that's somewhat educational, I think it might prove to be confusing that there are only 4 pages acknowledged. 

I don't need to see page numbers on the actual document (did that already in Photoshop and it's part of the overall jpg file) but is there a way to change the top number that ADE sees so that it acknowledges that there are 56 pages?  Or even 5 pages in chapter 1, 22 pages in chapter 2, and so on?

I'm attempting to set up my new MacBook Air to print out  a custom envelope size on  my Brother HL-5340D  –  something I've done successfully with my office computer (a black MacBook with OS X 10.6.8). After creating a print preset in the InDesign printer settings, I am having trouble getting access to the some of the more idiosyncratic printer settings (toner fixing, for instance). I keep running across this message: "Changing 'Media Type' to 'Plain Paper' would cause an unresolvable conflict with the selected custom paper. No change will be made."  Additionally, I am having trouble with reaching the advanced settings under the "Print Settings" menu of the standard Apple print dialog box (which encompasses the Brother-specific drivers). If I attempt to change the "Improve Print Output" settings I get a similar message: "Changing 'Improve Print Output' to 'Improve Toner Fixing' would cause an unresolvable conflict with the selected custom paper. No change will be made.'

I'm imagining there is some conflict between InDesign's printer settings (which I understand Adobe recommends InDesigners use whenever possible, but there are neither "media type" nor advanced print settings in the InDesign print dialog box), and I've compared the printer settings on my black MacBook (the one correctly printing) to my MacBook Air and I can't figure out the difference. The only suspicion I have is it seems that the black MacBook's printer settings in InDesign are somehow overriding the Apple/Brother presets, whereas on my Air, that's not happening – I've created a pre-set specifically for the custom envelope printout to complement (or so I thought, anyway) the settings that I could not reach from within the Adobe box. Back in Adobe's printer settings, for instance, the "Custom Size" option for paper is greyed out, so there are certain options that it seems I must access from the Apple/Brother drivers.

Hello all,

I am stumped on why indesign is seemingly unable to recognizing automated numbering in a paragraph style.

I've used numbered list styles in a document to automate question numbering to avoid manually entering it. This has worked perfectly for 2+ years until yesterday.

We currently run CS5. I opened up the document and noticed my numbered list styles which are nested into the numbered question styles, the automated numbers now highlight in pink as if missing a font, however there are no missing fonts that appear when I check my font list.

When others in the company open the same document on their machines, they get bullets in front of their numbers which really throws off the formatting.(I only get the pink numbers, while others get the bullets + numbers, sometimes it's pink, sometimes not like the images below)

I checked other (older) documents and the same issue is happening there when we use automatic numbering. (But again, I get the pink numbers, other get bullets infront of their numbers) We all have the same fonts in suitcase and the same styles.

I've checked every nested style and am certain the syles are built correctly (I've used the same styles for the past few years) I even redefined, reloaded them them to ensure they are set as numbers instead of bullets with no luck.

I also tried exporting to an idml with no luck.

To me it seems like a font error because even opening up past documents with these styles, the numbers turn pink.

Could this be an error with whatever font that indesign uses for automated numbering in Indesign? Is there a way to define the font indesign uses for automatic numbering? I'm wondering how to fix it because I have thousands of questions with the automated numbering set up.

Any advice?

I can provide more insight how the styles are built if needed. I'm confused why it would suddenly break for styles that worked well for so long.

Have a 60 p booklet, printed once, updated here and there, page #'s disappeared, have a ghost text block where they were with a + in it, like the block is too small. I've tried everything I know to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to use data merge to generate these labels:

I have a spreadsheet with 20 or so products. Each product can have up to 6 of about 18 icons. The  problem is, the remove blank lines feature doesn't seem to work for image placeholders. Any ideas how to get around this?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I created an assignment file with around 20 different stories. The next time I opened InDesign the writer had input text to most of the story files. One story file was a couple of pages of text, the rest were just a few lines of copy, nothing huge. Every time I tried to update the ICML files InDesign crashed. I didn't matter if I only tried updating one story or all of them, it always crashed. I was working on a PC when this happened. I moved over to my Mac to try and updated the ICML files and it crashed there too.

The actual InCopy ICML files on the server were fine. The writer never realized there was a problem. All of the copy was sitting there, so I was able to go back and re-import all the copy.

I did all the basic stuff to resolve the issue like restart, trash the prefs, convert to INX, and try on different computer. Nothing worked, crashed InDesign every time.

I'm currently using CS5, but this same issue came up last year on another project in CS4 as well.

Has anyone had this happen and/or know of a fix other than re-importing all the story files?

I have a proposal that will have variable data in it and needs to stay editable. I created the document in InDesign and not sure what program I can use to create the interface in.

What I want is to set up an interface that either I or someone in my office fill out or select certain items they want in the proposal and it creates a document (that is still editable, just in case there are a few tweeks they want)

The variable data would include the basics such as:

Client/Company name

Address

etc.

They also want to be able to select a menu of "benefits" to pick from.

For example the interface would say:

What benefits would you like to include in proposal?

X  Benefit A

    Benefit B

X  Benefit C

X  Benefit D

     Benefit E

Then the ones with the "X" would appear but not the rest.

Certain verbiage they use such as "customer or member" depending on what type of business they are writing the proposal for. For example:

A ....(verbiage would be customer)

B ....(verbiage would be member)

C ....(verbiage is customized)

Then there is some pages that will include math:

Is this even possible?

Is it possible to create a dreamweaver page, import that into excel and then run a data merge or am I over thinking it....even bigger question is it too complicated for someone else to do?

I am creating a photo book for a uni project. I have created one before but I had help (which was pretty much done for me with no explanation)

I have placed an image box on what will be the first of the image pages. I want to be able to sort of...copy and paste the positioning of this box onto the remaining pages.

I don;t want to have to manually create a box everytime I finish the previous page as I am concerned about whether I will be placing it in the right place

I create a form in InDesign with a Submit Form Button. After exporting it, it works in Acrobat, but it does not work when it's opened in Apple Preview.

Is there a solution to make it work in Preview?

Have my file cleaned up, (inx - reopen) have no sign of page #'s. Is there a SIMPLE way to get page #'s on all 60 pages? No skips, start at page one. Instructions on HELP are simply not clear.

I've upgraded from the CS4 Suite to CS5. InDesign is almost impossible to use, the screen redraw is painfully slow. Much slower than CS4, which was instantaneous. Anyone at Adobe want to clue us in to what's going on? And yes, Live Update is off. This is an awful step backwards.
